Fethiye
The rapid growth of Fethiye is no surprise. It has a rich history but the growth of tourist numbers to its great coastal location on Turkey's Turquoise Coast has ensured that visitors will still see some of the historical features but also the new buildings, hotels, villas, apartments. Its restaurants have gained a great reputation for serving Turkish cuisine based upon the fresh produce from the region's fields. Fish is a real favourite and the fish market in the centre of Fethiye sells to restaurants and the public from early morning until late evening. The public can take fish home but the real experience is to go to one of the restaurants surrounding the central selling stalls and ask them to cook it for a small fee.
Short Transfer
Fethiye is under 45 minutes from Dalaman Airport, east through the Gocek Tunnel then up over hills from which there are often great views of the sea and the many uninhabited islands. At some point during your holiday you should take to the sea and enjoy a day of sunbathing and swimming in some of the small coves or near the beaches on the islands. For now our job is to get you to your accommodation to begin your holiday.
Fethiye is a great natural harbour. There are regular ferries to and from Rhodes and rows of gulets and yachts offering day trips and longer trips if they have the accommodation and facilities on board. A day on the popular 12 Island Tour is probably the best introduction for those new to the sea; you may well catch the bug immediately.
Town and Resort
Fethiye combines being a working Turkish town with being a tourist resort. Tourism employs a significant number of people but even after the season ends there is plenty of activity. The weekly market each Tuesday is one of the largest in the area though the clothing section is perhaps smaller in the winter. The promenade has been extended from the centre of the town near the renovated amphitheatre and the statue of Fethi Bey, a pilot who died on a solo flight to Damascus. The town changed its name from Megri in his honour. There is now a modern promenade with restaurants and cafes that is being extended westwards each year towards the smaller resort of Calis where a significant number of ex - pats live all year round.
